The History of the Telephone
by: Destiny Fuller
The creator of the telephone is Alexander Graham Bell. He created the first telephone in March 7, 1876. The idea for the telephone was for the deaf to communicate because his mother and wife were both deaf. He attempted to create a device to help the deaf communicate. However, the invention that was created from this was the telephone, which helped people communicate easier all around the world.
Nearly 40 years later the first transcontinental telephone call was made in 1915. AT&T developed the transcontinental wire across the country in 1914, but waited until January 25, 1915 to open the line. The company wanted to wait until Panama-Pacific exposition to have a big celebration. During this time the Candlestick rotary phone was most commonly used.
The manual switching system was used to connect a call to another through a switchboard operator. That later ended in the 1960s when the invention of the electronic switching system changed the way phone calls were made. During this time the one piece rotary phone was common. Then later the push button phone was introduced.
In 1973 the first mobile phone call was made. Motorola released its mobile phone in 1983 to the public for sale. Before that time landline phones were used in households and businesses. Car phones and pay phones were the only way people could make phone calls while they were out. The invention of the mobile cell phone changed that by allowing people who have personal cell phones to make calls from wherever they are.
Today, telephone technology has evolved because phones now can do more then just make voice calls. For example, phones can also access the internet, make video calls, take and store pictures, and provide entertainment.
I believe that one day future telephones are going to be smaller and more complex.
